The US’ reciprocal tariffs on India will come into effect on August 1, a White House official told CNBC-TV18.

The US reciprocal tariffs against India that are currently in place have exemptions for goods such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. These are or could be subject to Section 232 tariffs of the Trade Expansion Act, a White House official told CNBC-TV18.

The final paper on tariffs moving past August 1 has not been released specifying anything beyond the top line rate, the official said.
The 50% tariff on steel and aluminium and 25% tariff on autos under Section 232, on grounds of national security, will continue facing these tariffs.
There will not be an additional 25% tariff with immediate announcement by US President Donald Trump.

There are no additional details on the penalty, the official added.

Trump on Wednesday said the US will introduce a 25% tariff on imports from India from August 1.

He added that India would face an additional, unspecified penalty, on August 1, for its trade and defence ties with Russia. However, he offered no further details regarding the same.

Two Russian imports under scrutiny after Trump tariffs

  • Russian crude imports: 35% of India’s crude oil imports in July came from Russia
  • Defence: India still has to get the deliveries of the remaining 2-400 units, which are set to be delivered by the end of 2026. India has been considering signing more contracts for Russian S-400 systems and is also weighing both Russian and US partnerships for fifth generation fighters.
