Najam Sethi calls for PSL vs IPL clash, global expansion for HBL PSL

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi has voiced support for a high-profile clash between the champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL), while also urging for PSL’s expansion to international markets.

In a recent interview with Express News’ Saleem Khaliq, Sethi expressed optimism about the idea of an IPL-PSL showdown, despite acknowledging the political and security challenges currently preventing such a fixture.

“If the situation improves, I think there should be a team of IPL champions and a PSL champion,” Sethi said.

While diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan continue to restrict sporting exchanges, Sethi believes the potential for such a match exists, given the calibre of talent both countries produce.

“It is our dream because, of course, India and Pakistan produce the best talent in the world. There is no doubt about it,” he said. “But will it be possible in the near future? I don’t see it happening soon.”

Sethi, who played a key role in developing the PSL into a global brand, also spoke about taking the league beyond Pakistan’s borders. He proposed staging games in the United States and the United Kingdom to tap into broader cricket audiences and increase financial viability.

“There is no problem at all with expanding the league,” he said. “I think that the PSL should be expanded, and if it can be played in the USA or the UK, or even have some games there, it could work out financially.”

The former PCB chairman concluded by emphasising the importance of global visibility for the PSL and urged stakeholders to explore opportunities that could attract new fans and sponsors.

“We should explore such options,” he added, reinforcing his vision of a more internationally visible and financially sustainable league.
