India’s largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is set to reduce its workforce by over 12,000 employees—approximately 2 per cent of its global headcount—during the financial year 2025-26. However, the move is not linked to efficiency gains from artificial intelligence (AI), according to the company’s top leadership.
As of June 30, 2025, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a total workforce of 6,13,069 employees, reflecting a net addition of 5,000 people during the April–June quarter.
The headcount update follows the company’s recent change in its HR policy, which mandates a minimum of 225 billable days per year for employees and limits bench time to a maximum of 35 days.
TCS also saw a rise in employee attrition, which climbed to 13.8% on a last-twelve-month (LTM) basis in the June quarter, up from 13.3% in the previous quarter. The company’s Chief Financial Officer acknowledged that attrition levels had reached a concerning point, highlighting the challenge of replacing experienced talent through fresh hiring. He added that the company is now prioritizing efforts to retain key talent, particularly at senior levels.
