Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), also referred to as the Ayushman Bharat Yojana is a health programme launched by the Government of India. It seeks to provide low-income and underprivileged families with access to free healthcare treatments. According to the National Health Authority (NHA), the programme offers health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually. The scheme pays for secondary and tertiary healthcare services, including hospital stays. The goal of this project is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the fundamental pledge to “leave no one behind.”

About Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana

The Government of India’s primary programme is the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, commonly known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. It was introduced in order to accomplish the goal of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), as suggested by the National Health Policy of 2017. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) are two interconnected parts of Ayushman Bharat’s continuum of care concept.

Ayushman Bharat’s second element, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), was launched on September 23, 2018, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, by Narendra Modi, the Honourable Prime Minister of India.

Any government or privately owned hospital in the country is able to provide cashless care to PM-JAY beneficiaries. According to myScheme, the programme serves around 10.74 crore low-income and impoverished families, which is roughly 50 crore beneficiaries. This indicates that roughly 40% of Indians will benefit from the programme.

Families were selected for the programme based on occupational and deprivation factors from the Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 (SECC 2011). Consequently, households covered under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) but not covered in the SECC 2011 database are also included in the coverage listed under PM-JAY.

Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana

AB PM-JAY offers cashless coverage for certain secondary and tertiary care problems up to Rs 5,00,000 per year to each eligible family. The following treatment components are covered under the plan, along with all associated costs:

Medical examination, treatment, and advice

Services for both non-intensive and intensive care

Medicines and medical supplies

Services for medical implantation (when required)

Pre-hospitalisation

Laboratory and diagnostic tests

Benefits of accommodations

Food services

Complications arise during treatment

Follow-up care after hospitalisation for up to 15 days

One or more family members may be eligible for the Rs 5,00,000 benefits, indicating that they are on a family floater basis. Under AB PM-JAY, there is no upper limit on the number of family members or their ages. Upon enrolment, any eligible individual who had a medical condition before PM-JAY coverage will be able to receive treatment for all of those conditions under this programme.

The beneficiaries must be Indian citizens residing in India, and families enrolling should not hold any health coverage at the time of applying for PM-JAY.
